Who We Are

Empowering young people through collaboration and innovation via the Community of Practice

From policy to operation

The Better Futures Community of Practice (CoP) unites government, services and lived experience under an Advantaged Thinking approach.

The CoP is a collaborative effort between Victorian Government’s Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, Better Futures service providers, the Brotherhood of St Laurence and CREATE Foundation with a shared vision to see young people transitioning from care in Victoria achieve a good life.

How we do it

The Brotherhood of St Laurence (BSL) is not a Better Futures provider. Their role is to enable innovation and collaboration between DFFH, service providers and Youth Expert Advisors under an Advantaged Thinking practice framework.

This work includes:
• Developing resources and guides
• Sector capacity building
• Coordinating Community of Practice events and activities.

Community of Practice membership

Better Futures is delivered by a range of community service organisations and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOS) across Victoria.

The Better Futures CoP is made up of more than 30 organisations utilising a common approach in Advantaged Thinking. Members leverage this platform to actively collaborative, drive innovation and share best practices. The CoP fosters a shared ambition for young people to develop sustainable livelihoods and lead fulfilling lives.

Young people at the centre

The Transitions from care Youth Expert Advisory Group (YEAG) is a lived experience collective. They ensure the voices and expertise of young people with care experience inform the service design, implementation and evaluation of Better Futures and Home Stretch.
